Sclerosing Injections for Neuromas |
| A
newly successful and non-surgical treatment for interdigital
or Morton's Neuromas is 30% alcohol sclerosing injections.
The patient typically undergoes
between 3 to 7 injections for each neuroma and the
needle will be manipulated carefully and slowly,
as to maximize the absorption of the agent into the
nerve. The injections usually result in the nerve
rendered anesthetic. Possible complications of the
injection include but are not limited to: pain after
injection, infection, nerve damage, atrophy. |

| Extracorporeal
Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) |
Extracorporeal
shock wave therapy is used to treat chronic heel pain
(plantar fasciitis/heel spur syndrome). During this
non-invasive surgical procedure, sonic waves are directed
at the area of pain using a device similar to that currently
used in non-surgical treatment of kidney stones."Extracorporeal"
means "outside of the body," and refers to
this non-invasive surgical procedure in which strong
sound waves are directed at the area of heel pain.
During the usually brief procedure of about 30 minutes,
performed under local anesthesia and/or "twilight"
anesthesia, strong sound waves penetrate the heel area
and stimulate a healing response by the body. An overnight
hospital stay is not necessary since extracorporeal
shock wave therapy is performed on and outpatient basis.
This therapy is a safe and effective alternative treatment
for heel pain and only requires a very short recovery
time, mainly due to the elimination of costly and invasive

| Diagnostic Ultrasound |
|
| In our continuing effort to provide our patients with the best in podiatric care we are proud to offer diagnostic ultrasound imaging of the foot and ankle right in our office. Much the way x-rays are used in our office to diagnose deformities and fractures of the bones, ultrasound can be instrumental in diagnosing soft tissue abnormalities of the foot such as cysts, abscesses, foreign bodies, neuromas, and ligament or tendon tears and ruptures. In addition, ultrasound can be used to assess healing as it progresses and even aid in the treatment such as guiding the needle into a specific joint or area of inflammation. Having this important diagnostic tool in our office will save our patients time and money because it will decrease the number of follow up visits by eliminating the need to drive to a radiology center and return at a later date for follow up and results.

With custom sandal or clog orthotics you can be casted for a pair of orthotics that are custom made to fit inside a pair of specialized sandals or clogs chosen and purchased by you. There are a variety of styles and colors available from notable brands such as Birkenstock. The orthotics may be covered by your health insurance and we will happily check your benefits at no extra charge. The sandals are not covered by insurance and the cost is subject to the brand and style chosen. |

| Minimally Invasive Nerve Decompression (M.I.N.D.) Surgery |
|
| Nerve decompression is a minimally invasive surgical treatment of painful Morton’s neuromas that can relieve forefoot pain. The traditional surgical procedure for a painful neuroma that has failed to improve with conservative treatment is to remove the enlarged section of the nerve. However, this will result in numbness of that area of the forefoot and poses an additional risk of developing a “stump neuroma” which is the enlargement of the severed edge of the remaining portion of nerve. These two potential adverse effects can be eliminated by nerve decompression because the nerve remains intact. There is a ligament in the forefoot, called the deep transverse inter-metatarsal ligament that causes pain by pressing on the enlarged nerve. By releasing this ligament with specialized equipment through a small incision on top of the foot, the nerve can remain intact and the recovery process is faster and less severe. |

| N.P.W.T. (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy) |

This is also known as “vacuum assisted closure” and is a system used to help promote wound healing. It helps to remove infectious materials and fluids from the wound. This treatment can be used on diabetic ulcers and pressure sores of the lower extremity. It helps to provide a moist wound-healing environment which is the standard of care for wound treatment.

| Therapeutic Footwear |
|
Dr. Beck and Dr. Deiboldt have joined with the American Diabetes Association in an effort to lower the amputation rate in the diabetic population. To achieve this goal, diabetic patients at risk are being identified and educated about proper footwear and care of their feet. In May of 1993, Medicare established a preventative footwear program for patients with diabetes. Since that time the program has been under-utilized and the amputation rate continues to rise. By supplying proper footwear, such as Dr. Comfort extra depth shoes, along with custom inserts to our diabetic patients at risk we have taken an active role in the campaign to lower the amputation rate.
Dr. Comfort extra depth shoes are designed for the special needs of diabetics. The extra width and depth of the toe box helps accomodate swollen feet, bunions, hammertoes, and other problems by decreasing pressure in those areas. The custom insoles are molded to your feet in the office and decrease soreness due to callus formation. These shoes are also light weight in construction to reduce daily fatigue. There are a variety of styles available for men and women. Ask us which is best for you!
If you are diabetic or have painful feet you are encouraged to make an appointment to be evaluated for deformities, neurological changes, and circulatory changes that may place you at risk for the development of open sores, infection, or amputation.
